Gamers will still have to create items and battle monsters

Video game developers Re-Logic and Engine Software are announcing that they are working on a new video game project called Terraria: Otherworld, which is designed to mix an open world and a sandbox structure and deliver a new take on the familiar universe.

The experience is set in an alternate version of the world, with the player character asked to fight in order to save the world he knows from an evil force which is corrupting nature.

Terraria: Otherworld will include a variety of gameplay challenges that will result in the restoration of the universe to its pristine initial state.

The title will apparently mix sandbox elements with role-playing and with strategy, but the two involved companies are not yet ready to offer more details on how the formula of the franchise will be expanded upon.

The reveal states, "Along with a rag-tag band of survivors, will you be able to successfully harness the power of an array of weaponry, magic, defenses, and even the world itself to thwart the designs of this unseen evil?"

The footage attached to this article is taken from a pre-alpha stage of the game and more information on Terraria: Otherworld will be offered in the coming weeks.

It is unclear what platforms the development team wants to target for the new title or what the launch window for it is.

Terraria: Otherworld might extend the brand in interesting ways

The first Terraria title was delivered on the PC in 2011 and has since been delivered on home consoles and mobile devices, with the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 versions arriving in late 2014.

The experience is clearly influenced by Minecraft when it comes to its core elements, but is more focused on story and the creation of items and weapons that can be used to take out the powerful monsters gamers can summon when they feel ready.

It will be interesting to see whether the big monsters will also be a part of Terraria: Otherworld or if the developers will create a more linear experience focused on one antagonist rather than an array of them.
