A garden gnome has become the talk of the town in Giles County, Tennessee, after a woman smashed it on the sidewalk and discovered that a mysterious figure was hiding inside.

Heather Andrews accidentally broke the garden gnome, named Pete, and, when she went to pick up the broken pieces, the woman was surprised to realize there was another statue inside its body.

Heather says she isn't sure what the smaller statue is but mentions that the mysterious clay figure appears to have been placed inside the gnome during its fabrication process, as it is fused to the top and to the bottom of the ceramic structure.

After Andrews posted photos of the unusual find online, Facebook users came up with a lot of theories as to what it could be. Some claim that the statue has the head of Jesus on a woman's body, whereas others say it may be an angel.

According to Yahoo News, the 27-year-old woman received the gnome from her childhood friend Jillian Pozzi, as part of a running joke between the two. And, although internauts have tried to identify the beautifully carved statue, its origin remains a mystery.

“A lot of people have told me that gnomes represent guardians of treasure, and maybe that's the treasure inside him,” Andrews says.

She is so determined to find out the origin of the white sculpture and why it ended up inside the gnome that she even created a Facebook page for Pete.
