After an incubation time of as many as 92 days, a cute keeled box turtle finally emerged from an egg kept in an incubator at the Tennessee Aquarium.

The baby turtle weighed merely 11.7 grams (0.41 oz) at the time of its birth, and is only the second of its kind to have ever been born at the Tennessee Aquarium.

Keepers explain that, since the facility incubated a total of seven eggs belonging to this species, they expected that several more such reptiles would be born.

Unfortunately, this little fellow was the only one that made it all the way to the delivery date.

Zoo Borns tells us that, because many keeled box turtles have been turned into either food or pets over the years, the species now risks going extinct.

20 animals belonging to this species are now looked after by accredited zoos and aquariums in the US, and conservationists are doing their best to breed them in captivity.
