The independent studio wants to experiment with the new platforms for now

Telltale Games, the independent developer behind the hugely successful adventure title The Walking Dead, is interested in new consoles like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One but, so far, it can't say anything about new games for them.

Telltale Games made a name for itself by delivering some memorable adventure games over the years but, with The Walking Dead episodic series, it really broke new ground and gained a cult following that expanded onto The Wolf Among Us, another separate series, and it should certainly affect the upcoming Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones projects.

Even so, Telltale is still a small studio and it is currently focusing on just a few platforms with its releases, in the form of the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and iOS.

The studio's CEO, Dan Connors, has talked a bit about the current preferred platforms for the games made by his team and how they're still relevant despite the fact that new consoles, for example, have appeared, in the form of the PS4 and Xbox One.

He talked with DigitalSpy and emphasized the big role digital distribution has in the gaming industry and in keeping old platforms relevant.

"This is a new world. In the old days, a new console came out and all the games from the old console went bye bye. You need to commit to the new console [as a developer] or there’s no place to sell your games. Now with digital distribution, Xbox Live Arcade is just as valid now as it was before Xbox One launched. Same with the PlayStation Network versus PlayStation 4."

Connors emphasized the importance of story in Telltale's games and promised that his team would try to experiment with the PS4 or Xbox One and find out ways the new platforms can improve storytelling in its future projects.

"I think we’ll get in and work with those guys on figuring out what they’re bringing to the table that’s special and unique, and how it helps our storytelling, how it brings value to our episodic experience. We’ll work with them to get the best thing we can out of it. For us, it’s still going to be about the story and about getting people invested in the characters that they play."

What's more, Connors also said that continuing the adventures should be easier, thanks to the cloud storage options on most platforms. As such, someone who played The Walking Dead Season 1 or 2 on the Xbox 360, for example, can store the save game in the cloud and pick up the progress when Season 3 potentially appears on the Xbox One.

Unfortunately, Connors emphasized that this was just an example and not a confirmation of things to come.
