Today, Telecom Italia, the largest wireless service provider in Italy has announced that it is undertaking a trial of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in Italy, in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks, a global leading telecommunications infrastructure and services provider.

According to the mobile phone carrier, it is undertaking the trial of LTE in a series of city areas of Turin, Italy.

At the same time, the wireless operator notes that the trial is one major step it takes towards the deployment of a next-generation network and for the delivery of enhanced services for its customers.

The deployment of a 4G network in the country is expected to offer TIM customers access to a series of new services on their mobile devices, including high definition video streaming, video conferencing, online gaming and others more.

According to the carrier, multimedia application aimed at smartphones should be made available to its users too.

“Telecom Italia trials the impact of LTE technology on its own networks supported by Nokia Siemens Networks’ technologies to finetune its transition towards 4G,” the company announced.

Nokia Siemens Networks has already put in place an efficient end-to-end offering for LTE, which includes its Flexi Multiradio Base Station.

Moreover, the infrastructure solutions provider announced that its Evolved Packet Core (EPC) technology is another LTE solution carriers can benefit from, and that it combines the highly-scalable Flexi NG (Network Gateway) and Flexi NS (Network Server).

“Nokia Siemens Networks’ commercial LTE accommodates high volumes of real-time traffic to enable operators to meet the data surge caused by the use of always-connected smart mobile devices,” the company concluded.

In case there are some who might have not encountered LTE before, we should note that this is one of the 4G standards that marks the next step in the evolution of mobile broadband solutions.

Already adopted by a series of wireless carriers around the world, the technology is expected to become the dominant 4G standard in a few years.
