Wireless carrier Vodafone Group, a worldwide leading mobile telecommunications company, and Tele Atlas, the widely known provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation, have announced today a partnership through which the former will make use of the latter’s digital maps and location-based content for its location-based services (LBS).

According to the duo, this agreement is meant to offer them the possibility to collaborate for the delivery of powerful LBS, as well as navigation offerings and routing and mapping applications aimed at mobile phone users. In terms of the agreement, Vodafone will be enabled to access Tele Atlas’ global digital map content and products, such as 3D Landmarks, 2D City Maps and Digital Elevation Models, as well as 24 million points of interest (POIs).

The availability of this content will enable mobile users who perform local searches to receive maps that reflect their surroundings better, the duo stated. In addition, the partnership between the two will also offer Vodafone the possibility to access Tele Atlas Speed Profiles, which should offer it highly accurate speed data so that navigation application users will receive the best routes and better estimations for the travel times.

Bobby Rao, director, Internet Services Marketing, and new business director at Vodafone Group said, “In an increasingly connected world, we are constantly striving to enrich our customers’ lives by enabling them to communicate wherever they are with the tools and services they need. Accurate location content is at the heart of many of these offerings, allowing Vodafone to deliver a powerful, seamless mobile experience around the world, based on up-to-date maps and content.”

Bill Henry, CEO, Tele Atlas, also noted that his company was happy to partner with Vodafone to offer “fresh, accurate maps and innovative location content” to wireless carrier's users. In addition, he also reiterated the company's commitment to deliver a rich navigation experience to Vodafone's subscribers, so as to enhance their mobile lifestyle.
