14 DAY TRIAL // The Teen Choice Awards 2014 were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and overall they were a less than glitzy and star-studded affair than in previous years. The most remarkable moment of the night nearly went by unnoticed.
It involved one of the hottest young pop stars of the day, Ariana Grande, and the absolute TV hunk (right now, at least) Ian Somerhalder of CW’s hit series “Vampire Diaries” and a kiss / peck on the cheek that should have been great, if only in theory.
In reality, it was a very awkward scene, in which Ariana, up on stage to accept her surfboard for Choice Female Artist, tried to avoid getting kissed on the lips or embraced too tightly, and ended up leaning to the side to an almost dangerous degree.
Ian still managed to plant a kiss on her cheek and remained apparently unfazed by her attempts to avoid him.
As most girls probably know, getting touchy-feely with another person, no matter who they are, is tricky when you’re all dolled up and glammed up, like Ariana was on the night of the awards gala, when she was wearing way more makeup than usual.
My bet is she was trying to avoid getting her hair and / or makeup messed up, but she made the moment awkward by overreacting. It’s not like Ian was going to smother and cover her in kisses, but it feels like she thought he would, from her reaction.
Whichever her reason and whatever might have happened in reality, the awkwardness proved very GIF-able and has now gone viral in the celebrity blogosphere. I could watch it for hours on end.
