Shape-shifting battlefield, no cooperative story campaign

New facts about Tecmo Koei 's take on the third person-shooter genre have been made available at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo. The game is called Quantum Theory and will tell the story of Syd and Filena, as they battle the deadly matter called Diablosis. This strange entity behaves like a disease, transforming the environment and soldiers in it in deadly enemies.

This narrative takes place in a bleak future in which a world war has decimated the human race. The two protagonists must enter the Living Tower where Diablosis originates and destroy it once and for all to save the little that remains of humanity. The gimmick that is meant to separate Quantum Theory from other cover-based third person shooters is the shape-shifting battlefield.

The Living Towers actively destroys and creates new covers as the combat goes on, forcing the players to think fast to survive. The art style will reflect this feature, as developers plan to mix organic matter with advanced technology to give Quantum Theory a distinctive aesthetic. Players will fill Syd’s shoes, while Filena will be controlled by the Artificial Intelligence. However, the duo will cooperate by executing devastating combos and overcoming environmental obstacles together.

Tecmo Koei is promising that the enemy AI will also be up to scratch, constantly harassing players and using team tactics to take them down. Syd will use massive guns, but will also have a gauntlet to dominate in close quarters combat. Filena will use the legendary “Lumiere,” a weapon that can act like a sword or an explosive sniper rifle, as the situation calls for it. There will be an online multiplayer component included, with various modes like Team Battle and Battle Royal. Curiously enough, Tecmo Koei has not announced that the game would contain a cooperative story campaign, as the presence of the two characters would otherwise suggest. Quantum Theory will be launched sometime this fall on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
