The development team at Media Molecule and publisher Sony are announcing that they will be launching a new and special PlayStation 4 version of Tearaway, called Unfolded, which is designed to expand on the mechanics of the initial title and adapt them in innovative ways to the new home console.

The studio says that it initially considered the delivery of a full port but realized that it would be impossible to create one, and that led to the creation of the new title, which will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second and has a rebuilt engine and more game options.

The official PS Blog announcement states, “The original Tearaway was a little papery world held entirely in your hands, and we used all the features of the PS Vita to deliver an experience that was as life-like and also fourth-wall-breaking as possible. With Tearaway Unfolded, we want to do the same thing, only this time the world is inside your TV and you interact with it using the unique inputs of the controller.”

The physical interaction element of the original Tearaway is still present and Media Molecule is using the DualShock 4 in order to deliver new ways to interact with the video game world.

Players will be able to swipe on the touch pad of the controller in order to make wind blow across the screen and use it to then take out enemies and to take down bridges.

Media Molecule adds, “You can shine the controller’s light bar into the TV to light up dark and gloomy places, growing and transforming the scenery, and guiding atoi along her way. Your little messenger companion can also throw items and creatures out of your TV and into your controller, where you can listen to them rattling around, before sending them hurtling back into the world.”

The studio says that the story told by the new Tearaway will be familiar to fans of the original title but will include new areas to explore and gamers will be able to enjoy beautiful graphics and improved gameplay.

At the moment, neither of the two companies is willing to say when Unfolded will be launched on the PlayStation 4.

Previously, Media Molecule stated that it was working on a new project that is native to the new Sony console and will use its processing power and unique features in a number of interesting ways, but that title will probably only arrive in 2016.
