Taylor Lautner says bulking up for “New Moon” was not as easy as one might think

In November, when it’s released, “New Moon” will see Taylor Lautner as no longer the delicate-looking Jacob fans got to meet in “Twilight,” as it’s already a well-known fact. The young actor underwent a grueling workout regime and a very strict diet to get in a more wolf-worthy shape, but it was no easy task, he says for the latest issue of Interview magazine (story via Yahoo! Movies).

Taylor spoke in the past as well about how hard he worked to be worthy to reprise his role in “New Moon,” which is just one of the many reasons why fans love and appreciate him so much. However, this is actually the first time that he goes into minute details about his diet and how badly he had it at one point. In the end, though, he adds, all efforts were well worth it, since he got to be part of one of the biggest movie franchises ever, not to mention score for himself a launching pad most actors would kill to get.

“As soon as I finished filming ‘Twilight,’ I knew I had to get to work right away; there could be no waiting involved. The day I finished ‘Twilight,’ I came home and started bulking up. For ‘New Moon,’ I’m 30 pounds heavier than I was in ‘Twilight.’” The actor tells the August issue of Interview. However, that much dedication did him harm at first, as he started losing weight instead of building muscle mass.

“I was in the gym five days a week, two hours a day. At one point, I was going seven days straight. I had put on a lot of weight, and then I started losing it drastically, so I was worried. It turned out I was overworking myself. My trainer told me that I couldn’t break a sweat, because I was burning more calories than I was putting on. The hardest thing for me was the eating. At one point I had to shove as much food in my body as possible to pack on calories. My trainer wanted me to do six meals a day and not go two hours without eating.” Taylor further explains.

Consequently, given all the above, it’s no wonder he’s now packing 30 pounds more, or that he has grown out of all his clothes for that matter. On the bright side, as hard as it might have been to become so buff over such a short period of time, Taylor can’t say he’s sorry: not only was he asked to return for the remainder three films of “The Twilight Saga,” but he also got to completely overhaul his wardrobe, he says with a smile.
