The world of smartwatches has just got a little stranger

If you thought the smartwatch that projected notifications on your wrist wasn't weird enough, here comes another strange concoction.

A startup going by the name of Tattoo Audio is planning to release a wireless headphone set that arrives with an integrated smartwatch and that can be paired with a smartphone and other smart devices.

The headphones are just a project for the time being and the team is gathering funds on Indiegogo, hoping to raise $550,000 / €403,828 in order to turn their product into reality.

The Tattoo Audio will certainly be one weird device. It will come equipped with a docking station for the smartwatch located at the top of the headphones and take advantage of support for aptX (an audio codec that delivers high-quality sound over Bluetooth).

If the project is successful, three versions of the smartwatch/headphone will become available. The TA-200 will be compatible with Android and Bluetooth 2.1 and 3.0 and will sell for $299 / €219. The TA-200 will be compatible with Android and Bluetooth 4.0 and come with a price tag of $349 / €256.

Last but not least, the TA-800 is the more versatile of the three, being compatible with Android and iOS plus Bluetooth 4.0 and will sell for $375 / €275.

The company claims this is the first “tri-connected” device of its kind and they might be right about it. The smartwatch can be integrated on top of the headphones (as shown in the video), but it can also be worn around the wrist. Imagine you’re out running and want to change a tune, you’ll be able to do it via a simple tap on your watch.

You’ll also be able to answer calls and text, and the transition between listening to music and taking a call will be achieved quite easily.

This seems to be quite a complicated device, so we’re pretty curious to see if Tattoo Audio manages to gather up all the money it needs. The smartwatch addition seems a little over the top, but as we told you before, device makers are trying their best to come up with something innovative.

The pricing is quite similar to Beats, but we’re not exactly sure if Tattoo Audio’s offering will manage to impress customers enough.

Puzzlingly, the Indiegogo page for the project has been removed and we don’t have any idea why. We could be talking about a bug for all we know. Nevertheless, you can still check out this video below detailing this corky device.
