SyFy probably never even dared to dream that “Sharknado,” the made-for-TV movie about a storm that brings live sharks on land, where they butcher and eat every person they fall on, would be such a hit. A sequel is now underway, with The Wrap confirming that both leads from the original will reprise their roles.

Those would be Tara Reid and Ian Ziering. Ziering’s involvement was confirmed a long time ago, but reports initially said that producers didn’t want Reid back because she’d asked for a raise and it was more than what they were willing to spend.

The sequel will be called “Sharknado 2: The Second One” and will start shooting right before Valentine’s Day in New York. Fans will have to wait until July to see the final film though.

“‘Sharknado’ was an extraordinary ‘perfect storm’ which captured the attention of movie fans across the globe,” Thomas Vitale, executive vice president, programming and original movies for Syfy, says.

“You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about Sharknado! By reassembling the creative team — and dropping sharks onto New York’s iconic sites — we’re unleashing yet another ‘fin’ wave of shark-mania,” he adds.

He’s got that part right: though working on a very dumb concept, with bad acting, and even worse CGI, the film was a huge hit, mostly through word of mouth online.
