At least it behaves like a USB portable data storage device when connected to a tablet

I've seen my share of portable optical drives that were little more than normal ODDs with nice cases, but Samsung's newest invention is a bit different.

Being a slot-in model is one thing, making it significantly thinner and lighter than others. The name is Samsung SE-B18AB.

The drive is a power-efficient thing, capable of living off the energy from a single USB connection rather than two.

It also uses the AV Connectivity tool, which lets it function as a normal portable data storage device when connected to USB-enabled tablets. It basically allows the tablet OS to treat the ODD like a flash drive or portable SSD/HDD, which is easier.

Other assets include the Smart Power Technology (the reason why a single USB connection is enough to power it) and Smart Archive Technology that stores data in standard DVD format, making it compatible with archival discs (ISO10995 standard and qualified normal discs).

Sadly, Samsung did not include a price in its announcement. It also didn't say whether USB 2.0 or 3.0 was used, but I'm betting on the latter.
