While makers of HDDs and SSDs are busy creating internal and external/portable drives, they are also making enclosures meant to let regular SATA drives be used externally, and TRENDnet has just revealed two such items.

TRENDnet's two newly-created drive enclosures, dubbed TU3-S35 and TU3-S25 are meant to house 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives, respectively.

For those interested in a reminder, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard allows data transfers to be done at up to a theoretical 5 Gbps.

This is ten times the performance possible on the USB 2.0 connection, although the new drive enclosures do, naturally, possess backwards compatibility with it.

The TU3-S25 can house one 2.5-inch SATA I or SATA II hard disk drive whose storage capacity can go as high as 1 TB. It is made of aluminum and has a power button on the front.

The other product, the 3.5-inch TU3-S35, supports, as already mentioned, one 3.5-inch drive, only the maximum capacity is 2 TB in this instance.

It comes with an USB Type A connector and has large cooling vents, plus an included mounting stand, to save space.

"USB 3.0 offers a huge increase in performance over existing USB 2.0 technology," stated Zak Wood, Director of Global Marketing for TRENDnet.

“When testing computers with USB 3.0 ports, we recorded an average 200% increase in performance as compared to a USB 2.0 connection. This results in significant time savings when transferring large files," Wood added.

The TU3-S35 is set to sell in the US at a price of $79.99., whereas the more compact TU3-S25 goes for $59.99. Both “will be available from online and retail partners shortly.”

Finally, since only a limited number of PCs in existence actually have USB 3.0 support of their own, the hardware maker also reminded that it has the 2-Port USB 3.0 ExpressCard Adapter TU3-H2EC, as well as the 2-Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Adapter TU3-H2PIE.
