Well-known movie director Guillermo Del Toro and video game publisher THQ have officially revealed the first details and a trailer for their joint project called inSane, which is set to be released at some point during 2013.

The trailer shown is very vague, which is probably a good thing considering that the game is probably still in the early stages of development, but suggests that the Del Toro directed video game will explore the horror genre.

The game will be developed by Volition, which already handles the Saints Row and the Red Faction franchises for THQ.

Danny Bilson, who is the executive vice president in charge of core games at THQ, has added via Twitter that his company has been working with Guillermo Del Toro on inSane for the last six months, mentioning that the “story beats” on the new game have been already finished.

In interviews, Del Toro has been asked about how he plans to approach the video game development process and has said that he is interested in creating a game experience which draws from the horror writing of H.P. Lovecraft that focused on atmospheric and intellectual scares more than on just monster closets and a lot of gore.

Del Toro stated his game would be “horror... but it's a very different type of horror game. It's not survival horror. It's truly a strange, geeky mix.”

The movie directors’ move into the gaming space has prompted a rather strong reaction from long established game designers like Ken Levine, the leader of Irrational Games, who has said that video game development is not linked to how movies are created and has suggested that each creator sticks to the medium he knows best.

Here's the trailer of inSane that was shown at the VGA ceremony when the official announcement was made:
