The update is delivered OTA (over the air), in waves

Canadian carrier TELUS has just released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade for the old HTC Desire HD. The update rolls out OTA (over the air) in waves, so owners might have to wait a while until they receive the upgrade.

Given the fact that the update is deployed OTA, it is recommended to ensure that the smartphone is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network and that its battery is at least 50% charged. Obviously backing up the device is advised as well.

HTC Desire HD owners who have yet to be notified on the update can check for it manually by going to Settings / About phone / System software updates / Check now.

Aside from bringing the Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the new update adds to following changes:

- HTC Sense 3.0 (improved Calendar, Messages, Camera, Gallery, Music, Weather, Lock screen, Reader and more);

- HTC Watch – Rent or buy the latest movies and or shows;

- Google Video Chat;

- Improved stability.

The installation process might take more than 10 minutes, after which the smartphone reboots itself. To make sure that Android 2.3 Gingerbread was successfully installed on the HTC Desire HD, it is recommended to manually check the software version by following the same procedure described above.

TELUS promised the Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire HD will be released last summer, but the carrier was forced to delay the roll-out for unknown reasons.

In fact, TELUS even made it official on its site that the Gingerbread update for its branded Desire HD was available for download several months ago, but quickly pulled it.

Today, the carrier is back with the final version of the update. For more details on how to update your HTC Desire HD to Android 2.3 Gingerbread head over to TELUS site.
