TDK Corporation has announced the signing of an agreement with Sony that allows it to produce and distribute TDK Professional Discs (PD-RE23CN), which are rewritable discs compatible with Professional Disc System (XDCAM), developed by Sony. These new discs will be available starting from July.

TDK Professional Disc uses a blue-violet laser beam which has a small width both for writing and for reading, and has a storing capacity of 23.3GB, which is five times the capacity of a DVD; the transfer rate is 72 MBps.

Because of the random data access possibilities, and other functions specific only to discs of this type, it is estimated that TDK Professional discs will be associated with broadcasting applications.

The technology for reading such a disc is based on violet laser, very sensitive materials that easily change their state and a layer structure specifically designed for high speed burning.

Due to the high density of data on the Professional Disc System, any dust particle adhering to the surface of the disc can affect the accuracy of the reading.

TDK used a "shielding" technology for this layer, called DURABIS PRO2, which makes the disc durable and stable.
