Solid state drives have become quite popular in the last couple of years with new models launching almost every day, and TDK has just increased the number of such solutions available on the market with the addition of the GBDriver RS3 series of industrial grade 2.5-inch SSDs.

Drives from the GBDriver RS3 product family were specially optimized to be used inside tablets, thin clients and embedded devices and are housed in an aluminum enclosure, which should improve the drives performance when exposed to shocks and high operating temperatures.

On the inside of the case, users will be greeted by a TDK developed controller with a native SATA 3Gbps interface and automatic 128-bit AES encryption support.

This is also designed to include ECC and data recovery capabilities, provides a special static wear leveling technology, SMART command support and an auto refresh function that periodically reads and detects bit errors in order to perform the necessary corrections.

The TDK controller is paired together with SLC (single-level cell) or MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory as well as with an internal power supply protection circuit to prevent power interruption errors from occurring.

Performance wise, the SLC solid state drive models, which range in capacity between 8GB and 64GB, offer read/write transfer speeds of 160/60 MB/s, while the MLC models (capacities ranging between 16GB and 128GB) reach 160/25 MB/s.

“The TDK SDG3B series of industrial SSDs are SATA flash memory drives ideal for use as replacements for hard disc drives in industrial equipment and embedded devices,” said Yoichi Osuga from TDK's corporate communications department.

“They provide high-speed performance, data reliability, storage lifespan, and data security at the highest levels in the industry,” concluded the company's official.

TDK's GBDriver RS3 solid state drives will enter mass production in September of 2011 with an estimated production capacity of 10,000 units/month at launch.
