Is "cubic sound" possible?

I simply love the world of design! I mean, how could anyone not love it, especially as it comes each day with either new things in new shapes or old things in new shapes? It's a constant turmoil for drawing the public attention towards the emergent things.

Some loudspeaker manufacturers (like Cabasse) prefer things in a shape as spherical as technologically possible and motivate their engineering in the most scientific ways, bringing in the discussion things like "round shapes diminish distortions" or "the sphere is a very strong shape"; nevertheless, I guess they are right because their "EyeBall speakers" were a real hit...

Yet some other manufacturers don't seem too impressed by the engineering powers of the sphere, but would rather go for definite, classic and trouble-free shapes namely, cubes. TDK has been a renowned brand for many years in the field of sound tech; but these days they pulled off quite an interesting contraption: the Orange Cubic Speakers.

It's as simple as that: the TDK SP-XA40WR is actually one cube which houses a flat-panel 2.1 channel surround system. Rather hard to believe you might say... yet (since it sells) it looks like it does the job, doesn't it?

The corners of the very lovely cabinet have been rounded so the stationary waves would be lessened while the controls are even less than minimal. You can put the TDK Flat Panel 2.1 Acoustic Sound System next to whatever you like: it will not only look great in no matter whose company, but will also add a bright spark of nonchalant design to your room or tabletop - the colors it comes in are red, black yellow, grey and orange, thus fitting almost perfectly in any ambient you'd choose to place them.

The detailed technical data is not available yet, but so far we can tell that the box houses one 10W woofer and 2 5W "surround" speakers so the TDK "cubist" speakers can really make a blast in your home if needed. Reportedly, the signal comes from a 3.5mm jack input so it means you'll be able to connect almost any sound device to the speakers.

This website (Japanese) offers the TDK Flat Panel 2.1ch Acoustic Sound System for 3,800 yen and this means roughly $35. If you're not looking for audiophile equipment but for cozy and very neat-looking speakers for your room, there you go, they're not only looking awesome but also incredibly cheap.
