T-Mobile's network named the fastest in top 100 US markets in third-party study

A recently performed independent third-party study in the United States shows that wireless carrier T-Mobile is currently operating the fastest wireless data network in the top 100 U.S. markets.

According to the said study, the performance levels offered by the wireless carrier's airwaves outperformed all other wireless networks that were tested.

“2010 was a banner year for T-Mobile’s network expansion,” said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer for T-Mobile USA. “We have deployed fiber backhaul to our cell sites to deliver an industry leading mobile data experience on the latest T-Mobile smartphones and broadband devices.

“Today, we are delivering the fastest data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets on average, and it’s only going to get faster as we upgrade our network to offer 42Mbps capability in 2011.”

According to the wireless carrier, the results of this study are based on national drive testing that was conducted in the United States between June 2010 and November 2010.

The company also notes that all the testing was conducted by a leading third-party research firm, which used laptop data sticks to download and upload files for testing the data transfer speeds of major US wireless carriers.

The speeds that T-Mobile's HSPA+ network can offer determined the company to promote its services as being 4G, and recent news suggest that the carrier might be right when naming its network as being 4G.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) stated recently that the term 4G would very well apply to LTE and WiMax, as well as “to other evolved 3G technologies,” and T-Mobile's HSPA+ network falls into this category.

Customers interested in benefiting from the enhanced services that T-Mobile can offer would be able to connect to its network via a wide range of 4G products, such as handsets, laptop sticks and a 4G-enabled netbook.

T-Mobile will continue to be at the forefront of wireless innovation, delivering 4G products across a variety of categories in 2011,” the wireless carrier announced.

As for the aforementioned results, T-Mobile says that they are “based on independent, third-party drive test data for Top 100 U.S. Markets (on a population-weighted basis) driven between June 2010 and November 2010,” but does not offer specific info on the matter.
