14 DAY TRIAL // Google's Android mobile platform was officially announced quite some time ago, but there's still no device on the market to run on it. Well, according to recently unveiled details, this will change pretty soon, as T-Mobile USA is said to be the world's first mobile carrier to offer an Android-powered handset.
The New York Times is reporting that the fourth largest North American carrier is closely working with Google and HTC in order to release the first Android handset as soon as possible, maybe starting October.
The device seems to be "HTC Dream", on which there is little info at the moment (save for the fact that it will run on Google's Android, being a touchscreen handset). According to the Unofficial T-Mobile blog, the handset will actually be named HTC G1 and it will feature a 3 Megapixel camera and 3G connectivity, coming for a retail price of only $399, in three color versions (white, black and brown). Of course, we have to wait until official details emerge in order to be sure of these aspects, but it's very likely that they are correct.
It is said that T-Mo, HTC and Google might announce the new Android smartphone in September. This will be the only Android handset available Stateside in 2008, which means that AT&T, Verizon and Sprint (the other three major US carriers) can say goodbye to all the Android-hungry mobile users.
Until September comes, however, there is a video that mobile users might want to watch. This presents what is believed to be T-Mobile's Android-powered HTC Dream. As seen in the video, the handset sports a wide touchscreen display that can be slid to unveil a full QWERTY keyboard (resembling T-Mo's exclusive Sidekick series). The touchscreen seems to have a high resolution, probably a VGA one, which is definitely a good thing.
