Some users have reported that they received a new software update for their T-Mobile G2 Android smartphone. While the carrier hasn't announced it officially yet, it seems that the update brings a few missing features, such as Wi-Fi Calling and Tethering.

The new software update is being pushed OTA only to a handful of G2 users, as the carrier is probably testing it for a limited time.

Still, this will probably go to a larger scale pretty soon after the trial period is over, or until a direct link to the update is discovered.

Those with rooted smartphones are adviced to avoid updating their phone's software, as this might unroot your device.

The major highlights of the software update is the introduction of Wi-Fi calling, as well as native tethering.

Thanks to the guys over XDA-Developers who reported the update, we are now in the position to confirm the above mentioned changes, as well as a few more.

Further, those fortunate to get the update will notice that their device now features Hotspot capability, as well the ability to update Goggles.

As a side note, it seems that developers are stating that the new OTA update will not help users gain root.

In fact, by releasing this update so soon, T-Mobile is probably trying to divert users' desire to root their G2 devices, now that they have tethering, mobile hotspot and Wi-Fi calling features.

It would be interesting to find out if the carrier will charge the tethering use, or how long it will take them to do that.

You can check out if the software update is available by going to About Phone / System Updates.

If it says that your software is up to date you will have to wait, as the carrier is pushing the software in waves to avoid overloading its servers.

After the rumors about a possible software update that is being pushed to G2 users, T-Mobile made the following statement:

"Wi-Fi Calling and tethering/Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2. T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers and we’re working to deliver them to G2 users in the future. We have nothing further to announce at this time." While this doesn't negate the rumored software update, which might be trialed as we speak, it certainly makes us believe that the said update is a work in progress and will not be pushed to all G2 users anytime soon.
