SystemRescueCd is a Linux system on a bootable CDROM for repairing your system and your data after a crash. It also aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing hard disk partitions.

SystemRescueCd contains a lot of system utilities (parted, partimage, fstools and so on) and some basic ones (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It aims to be very easy to use: just boot from the CD and you can do everything. The kernel of the system supports most important file systems (ext2/ext3, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660) and network ones (Samba and NFS).

SystemRescueCd is also available for blind people. Now, the Linux speakup version 1.5 screen reader is working well, and the speakup keymap is installed.

SystemRescueCd is based on the Gentoo LiveCd, because Gentoo provides an easy way to keep all packages up to date.

Let's see the packages included in SystemRescueCd 0.2.19:

? Linux-kernel-2.6.16 ? GNU-Parted ? QtParted and PartGui ? Partimage ? Grub/Lilo ? File System tools ? Evms ? Archiving tools ? Sfdisk ? nano ? vim (VI Improved) ? QTinyEditor ? Midnight Commander ? Mkisofs ? Cdw ? Udftools ? dvd+rwtools ? nslookup ? nmap ? netcat ? Chkrootkit ? Clam-AntiVirus ? lynx ? links ? CaptiveNtfs ? Perl ? shred ? wipe ? md5deep ...and more

So, if you have problems with your hard drive, your system has crashed or you just want to manage some data on a hard drive without any operating system on it, you can use SystemRescueCd. You can also wipe data on hard drives with it, but remember that you will never recover that data!
