Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manger Self-Service Portal 2.0 (SSP) is one of the new releases coming from TechEd Europe 2010 in Berlin. Having just announced Hyper-V Cloud, a new set of offerings aimed at streamlining the building and deployment of private Clouds, Brad Anderson, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Management and Security Division also unveiled the new System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal 2.0.

The bits for System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal 2.0 are already available for download. Customers interested in the new solution can head over to the Microsoft Download Center and grab the bits free of charge.

The focus of SCVMM SSP 2.0 is to deliver a set of capabilities, with a focus on self-service, that enable companies leveraging private clouds to be able to offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

In this regard, it’s no coincidence that SCVMM SSP 2.0 was announced in conjunction with Hyper-v Cloud.

As Anderson explained yesterday, Hyper-V Cloud is based on Windows Server Hyper-V and System Center. It should not be a surprise that SCVMM SSP 2.0 was also put together on top of Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V, and System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

The software giant does underline the fact that SCVMM SSP 2.0 is a partner-extensibility solution, which can be used to pool, allocate, and manage resources.

This enables customers to make available IT as a service. Microsoft even offered a list of reasons why customers should take advantage of use the Self-Service Portal.

“- Allocate datacenter resources. Use SCVMM SSP 2.0 to pool datacenter infrastructure resources, such as network, storage, load balancers, virtual machine templates, and domains, and make them available to business units to meet their infrastructure needs.

- Simplify business unit on-boarding. Use SCVMM SSP 2.0 to simplify the process of enrolling a business unit and provisioning its infrastructure. With SCVMM SSP 2.0, datacenter administrators can register business unit requirements in one central location.

- Validate and provision infrastructure requests. Use SCVMM SSP 2.0 to simplify the process that datacenter administrators use to validate and provision a business unit IT administrator’s infrastructure requests.

- Provide forms for self-service virtual machine provisioning. Use SCVMM SSP 2.0 to streamline the business unit IT user’s experience in managing virtual machines.

- Extend and customize virtual machine actions. Use the powerful extensibility features of SCVMM SSP 2.0 to work with IHV, ISV, and SI partners to customize different virtual machine actions (create, delete, stop, start, resume, shutdown, pause, store, and deploy)."
