Over the past months, quite a few new NAS devices have debuted, eager to grab the hearts of as many network administrators as possible. Still, as the world moves forward, technology has to advance at the same pace, which means that the performance and security standards that NAS devices must adhere to evolve as well. To stay up-to-date, or even ahead of the times, Synology has now brought forth a pair of DiskStation Series products meant for small and medium businesses.

The two single- and dual-drive solutions go by the names of DiskStation DS110+ and DS210+, respectively. They both operate on a 1.06GHz processor and have 512MB of RAM, as well as three USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA connector. Of course, being network storage devices, they need the ability to actually interact with other electronics via LAN, which is why they feature a Gigabit Ethernet port. As for performance, they read and write data at 108MB/s and 68MB/s, respectively.

The other aspect that the products excel at is security. Both NAS devices come with 256-bit AES hardware encryption engines that offload encryption tasks away from the CPU, ensuring both safety and performance. Tests suggest that the encryption engine reads about 200% faster than a pure software encryption. Not only that, but features like Wake on LAN/WAN, scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation make sure that the power-efficiency aspect is also taken care of. To be specific, the DS110+ eats up only 21W, while the DS210+ runs on 30W.

"The Synology DS110+ and DS210+ provide users with secure network attached solution that protects data confidentiality while [it] keeps performance high," Rosiel Lee, product manager of Synology Inc., said.

The DS110+ and DS210+ cost $339 and $450, respectively, and are already available globally. End-users will have to acquire the desired storage units separately.
