Symwave Inc, a semiconductor supplier of high-performance analog/mixed-signal connectivity solutions for the PC, and consumer and mobile devices, recently announced a collaboration with one of the leading manufacturers of computer and consumer storage products, Seagate Technologies. The two companies are expected to demonstrate a USB 3.0 storage controller device, designed by Symwave, at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, starting on January 8.

Participants at CES and at the aforementioned demonstration will be able to see data streamed to and from a commercially available external storage device, with speeds unattainable with USB products currently available on the market.

“Symwave is honored to be working with Seagate in this show of the first USB 3.0 solution in a real world application of data backup, storage and media streaming,” said Yossi Cohen, president and CEO of Symwave. “Customer reaction to our new PHY device for USB 3.0 has been extremely positive and we will continue to focus on delivering leading-edge products that will allow them to address the growing demand for high-speed storage solutions.”

According to the two companies, the FreeAgent family of external storage solutions, designed by Seagate, has been selected to be showcased in the demonstration. These drives will be used to demo the superiority of the read-and-write transfer speeds, enabled by the specifications of the new USB 3.0 connectivity standard.

The SuperSpeed USB 3.0 specification is expected to provide the end-user with a transfer speed up to 10 times higher than the one achieved by today's devices. The solution is designed to be backwards compatible with more than 10 billion USB devices currently available out there.

Although it has been anticipated for a while now, it is still uncertain when the USB 3.0 will become a standard for USB devices on the market.
