Managers need to take security measures to prevent unfortunate situations

A recent study made by Dell KACE revealed that almost 90% of company staff members use personal devices such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets to complete work-related tasks, thus exposing corporate data to the ever-present threats coming from the internet.

The survey involved more than 700 IT professionals and it demonstrated “the growing 'Consumerization of IT' trend” that affects most organizations and which leaves managers admitting that the situation is way out of control.

"Consumer products are evolving into viable businesses tools, but according to our research, the majority of companies do not have a proper strategy in place to manage these devices which opens them up to serious security risks," said Diane Hagglund, author of the study.

82% of IT managers show concerns about the use of personal devices to conduct business and 62% state that they are aware these practices might cause security breaches.

Key findings of the research also show that the advantages brought by mobility have made everyone accept the situation, many organizations extending support for multiple operating systems because of the need created by the utilization of private apparatus.

Security measures are highly important to managers, as many of them acknowledge that 32 % of their employees use unauthorized machines to connect to the company's network and twice that number say they are not aware of all the gadgets deployed by the hired hand for business purposes.

Almost all the participants believe it's important to have a proper policy in place to support personal devices, but many of them admit to not having the necessary resources.

"The results of our latest survey represent a significant shift in how systems administrators manage their organization's networks in today's disparate global workforce.

"It's absolutely essential that IT teams deploy a strategy that provides end-to-end management capabilities on a variety of operating systems to effectively protect networks and address the ‘Consumerization of IT'," revealed Rob Meinhardt, general manager of Dell KACE.
