39-year-old Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., of Orcutt, California has suffered a shark attack off Surf Beach in Lompoc, Santa Barbara, yesterday. The man's injuries were fatal.

The surfer was swimming off the Vanderberg Air Force Base beach, 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Los Angeles, which was open to tourists. He was not affiliated with the base, Air Force officials stated.

Francisco was accompanied by a friend, who pulled him out of the water after the attack, and attempted to revive him, Huffington Post reports.

"His friend ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid," sheriff's Sgt. Mark A. Williams said.

The beaches on the Santa Barbara coastline, in the proximity of Surf Beach, remain closed for at least 72 hours after the attack, to prevent similar incidents, Col. Nina Armagno stated.
