Superman / Clark Kent and Lois Lane have been married since 1996 and, to fans’ knowledge, they have been very happy so far. With the new line that will roll out in September this year, DC Comics will present a new side of Superman: that of a single man.

Superman and Lois Lane will go their separate ways because this will allow the narrative to explore different directions.

This will also mean that creators will be able to show both Superman and Lois in a different light, and to present them as multidimensional characters – Lois, in particular.

“We just felt there were more interesting, creative stories to mine in that time period of Superman’s history prior to him getting married,” Jim Lee, one of DC’s co-publishers, along with Dan DiDio, says for USA Today.

There’s this distinct feeling that all that could be said and done about the love story between the two has already been said and done, so it’s high time for a reboot.

“There was something special and unique about the love triangle that existed between Clark Kent, Superman and Lois Lane,” Lee says.

“By restoring that essential part of his mythology, we would get a lot more interest in the character and take Superman and Clark Kent in bold new directions that felt more contemporary and modern,” he adds.

And that’s not all that will change in the new comics line: Superman will also get a new suit (no more red panties) and a villain that is actually way stronger than he is.

What remains unchanged is the work rivalry between Lois and Clark, because that is an important element in the story and doesn’t need alteration.

The idea with all this is not to upset fans on purpose by operating drastic changes to their favorite superhero, but to show that there are sides of him that are yet to be explored.

“Maybe as readers and fans, we’ve grown a little too comfortable with Superman,” Lee underlines.

“Part of the creative changes we’ve put behind the mythology is to tell people, ‘Look, you may think you know Superman, but you don’t.’ There’s a lot of great stuff about the character that we’re going to show you that hasn’t been discussed or presented before,” Lee adds.
