Summer blockbusters from the past 5 years look similar

If you ever watched a movie trailer and had the strange feeling that you’d seen it before, even though you knew you couldn’t have, that’s probably because you watched a preview for a summer blockbuster.

For the past 5 years or so, big studios developed a certain recipe for the trailers for their summer blockbusters. The marketing for Chris Nolan’s “Inception” in 2010 was beautifully planned and executed, with trailers that started a new trend in Hollywood.

You can recognize the copycats from the use of the now-cliché and quite obnoxious “bwaaaaaam!” (which was a novelty at the time, and was perfectly integrated into Hans Zimmer’s OST) and the quick cuts to action scenes and the dramatic monolog in voiceover.

Again, at the time, all these things were new and very effective, so naturally, Hollywood took them, ran with them and forgot to come back. The latest video from Red Letter Media proves the point with the first video below (the second one is the preview for “Inception,” in case you forgot it), which compares the stages of a modern blockbuster trailer.

You will notice that most of these films are pure action or of the superhero genre. We get “Avengers,” “Thor” and “Captain America,” but also the newer “Fantastic Four” and “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Godzilla” and “World War Z.”

If anyone ever tries to convince you that Hollywood is not running out of novel ideas, show them this universal trailer for all the blockbusters released in the past few years.
