Acer may have suffered a rather unfortunate financial blow during the second quarter, but this has not stopped it from going ahead with its projects, such as a new TravelMate Timeline notebook.

The newest mobile computer that Acer created is not some new PC, but a laptop aimed at business professionals.

One of the unusual things about it is that, somehow, a 14-inch LCD was made to fit into a 13.3-inch form factor.

The frame of the machine was also made to reach an unusual thinness, of 0.87 inches, even as the internal parts cut no corners.

Not only is the second generation Core i5 CPU backed up by 4 GB of RAM (random access memory), but there is also a hard disk drive with a platter speed of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute). Its capacity is of 320 GB.

All of this, plus the full range of connectivity and I/O capabilities (WiFi, WiDi Support, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, USB 3.0, Webcam, fingerprint reader, etc.) are kept running by an 8-cell battery.

It is that battery which can last for up to 13 hours on a single charge, no doubt aided by the use of LED backlighting for the aforementioned LCD panel (whose resolution is 1,366 x 768 pixels, HD as it were).

"True road warriors and professionals need a thin and light mobile PC that is capable of running heavy business applications and presentations," said Gregg Prendergast, vice president of commercial sales and marketing for Acer America.

"The TravelMate Timeline 8481T notebook is an important addition to our commercial notebook portfolio, as it combines everything a business professional requires on the road or in the office, including exceptional performance, enterprise-level security and manageability and long battery life in a small form factor for a best-in-class mobile experience."

All the hardware is kept inside a magnesium-aluminum case with metal-alloy hinges. Sales will start in US and Canada in September this year (2011), for $999.
