Dual-interface drive provides a new level of flexibility

Normally, storage solutions can be classified as internal or external, but there are some models that practically bypass this by integrating two types of connectivity options. This allows them to communicate with host PCs in more ways than one, and this extra level of flexibility always raises the appeal of such products. Knowing this, Super Talent developed the UltraDrive MX which has both SATA II and mini USB connectors.

The SSD, or SSDs in this case, do not exactly lose to many competitors in terms of performance, thanks to the JMicron 616 controller. This chip allows files to be read at up to 250 MB/s and for writing to be accomplished at 180 MB/s.

The UltraDirve MX even comes with support for TRIM and the latest GC, and this should preserve the transfer rates over time. Nevertheless, it is the functionality and versatility provided by the dual-interface construction that is the real asset of the product.

One thing it can be used for is the upgrade of a PC or notebook. Customers can first use the USB connection to create an image of the drive inside the computer. Later, they can simply swap the two and reboot their system. As such, an external drive enclosure is not required, and this saves both time and financial resources.

"Most customers know that Solid State Disks offer superior Performance, Reliability and Power Savings, yet they have been unable to makes the switch. The dual-interface on the UltraDrive MX enables a convenient bridge solution during this critical transition period," said Super Talent COO, C.H. Lee.

Super Talent intends to market this newcomer as part of its Value line and Enterprise SSD offering. It will start shipping them in September, in capacities of 60GB, 120GB, 240GB and even 480 GB. Unfortunately, the pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
