Given the fact that its level of interest in the PC market (especially in terms of portable computing systems) has seriously increased over the past couple of years, Korean company Samsung has decided to introduce a brand-new ODD for computer users, namely the SE-406A optical disk drive.

However, what we're dealing with here is a highly-advanced solution, capable of actually providing computer users with fast and easy access to the enhanced multimedia universe available from 3D Blu-ray discs.

However, 3D Blu-ray playback support is just one of the many cool new features implemented within the new SE-406A ODD by Samsung, the device also being able to render 2D movies in 3D, not to mention reading normal BD discs and also reading and writing on DVDs and even CDs.

Naturally, access speeds will depend directly on the type of optical media being used, the external optical disk drive from Samsung achieving 6X speeds on BD-R, 4X on BD-R Dual Layer, 24X on CD-ROMs and CD-RWs, while recording speeds are, naturally, slower, namely 8X for DVD±R discs, 8X for DVD-RAM media, 6X for DVD+R Dual Layer recording and DVD-R Dual Layer recording, as well as 8X for DVD+RW recording and 6X for DVD-RW discs.

Furthermore, in order to prevent any problems from occurring during the disk writing process, the drive writer features Buffer Under Run technology.

“With a compact footprint for easy portability, the new external 3D Blu-ray ODD is USB powered to eliminate electrical outlet requirements while enabling ultra fast data loading speeds versus previous models to quickly access video, audio and photo files,” said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “

Last, but certainly not least, we'll have to mention that Samsung's new SE-406A optical disc drive is set to become available in stores over the course of April, with a MSRP starting at US$150, which makes it extremely affordable, all things considered.
