One of the most common causes of complaint when tablet users are concerned is insufficient battery life. But a team at Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Science is working to develop a sugar powered battery.

The team has managed to create a workable prototype using partially digested starch foods found in common vegetables like potatoes, says TechRadar.

The researchers claim this eco-friendly battery will be capable of providing a battery life increased tenfold, compared to today’s lithium-ion batteries.

The scientists hope their invention will head for mass production in just three years and if they grace the market they will provide cheaper, refillable and environmentally friendly way to sustain the life of our gadgets.

Sony was also working on a similar project back in 2007 and went as far as to suggest that shredded paper could be turned into sugar as people charge their devices. Apparently, the tech giant abandoned the project, but the scientists at the Virginia Tech College luckily stepped in.
