Minor upgrades to the S51 and S51c

Together with the P80 bridge model, Nikon has also announced today two models aimed at replacing the ultra-compact S51 and S51c digital cameras. Unsurprisingly, the new S52 and S52c offer just about the same features as their predecessors. In fact, the things you do get are: some extra resolution (not necessarily an improvement), a boost in ISO speed (again, not necessarily a good thing) and the Expeed image processor (probably the most significant improvement).

Anyway, let's take a look at what the S52 and S52c have to offer. First of all, let's get one thing straight. The two models are virtually identical in specs, except for one, and that's the Wi-Fi support in the S52c.

They both offer 9.0 megapixels of resolution, a 3x optical zoom lens with a picture angle equivalent to that of a 38-114mm in 35mm terms. Such a picture angle will allow you to shoot landscapes and architecture, but without the impressive perspectives offered by an ultra wide angle, together with standard candids. Macro shots are also possible, since the two models can focus as close as 4cm (1.6 in.).

Vibration Reduction technology is also present and it allows you to use slower than recommended shutter speeds, which basically stands for being able to take excellent images even if your hands are a bit on the shaky side.

ISO sensitivities of up to 3200 can be selected, but be warned that noise levels in the images will be horrendous and will probably cause friends and family members to cover their eyes in horror (a bit of exaggeration here, but the tiny 1/2.5-inch sensor should not be pushed to such values).

Both models sport a large 3.0-inch LCD monitor with 230k-dots of high resolution, a wide vertical and horizontal viewing angle of 170 degrees, anti-reflection coating and acrylic panel that prevents scratches and fingerprints.

As previously mentioned, the S52c comes with built-in Wi-Fi support. Here's what the press release has to say about this capability: "Upload, categorize and share photos directly from the camera to my Picturetown and explore the potential of "anytime, anywhere" access. The my Picturetown service offers the Picture Bank function for easy storage and Picture Mail, which triggers an email notification to friends anywhere. In addition, my Picturetown allows for easy viewing on cell phones (Japan and US only) and simple posting of links to blogs and websites. Pictures can also be played as full-screen slideshows with my Picturetown."

The COOLPIX S52c is available in a variety colors including Gloss Silver and Purplish Black, while the COOLPIX S52 is available in Silver, Purplish Black, Coral Pink, Beige Gold, Matte Black, Gloss Red and Forest Green. The COOLPIX S52 and S52c will be available in May 2008. The S52 has an MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price) of $249.95, and the S52c has an MSRP of $279.95.
