When Ferrari crashes into a lamppost

Nicolas Cage is making his return to action movies with “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” in which the actor plays a sorcerer looking for an apprentice in New York. A car chase sequence in Times Square ended badly for two bystanders as a Ferrari swerved out of traffic and smashed into a lamppost, injuring them, the New York Post informs.

According to several reports in the US media, the stunt was being shot on a closed scene, shortly before 1 a.m. Still, there were some bystanders on the sidewalks, trying to catch a peek of what it’s like to shoot an action movie, despite the fact that Nicolas Cage was not on set when the accident occurred.

This specific stunt featured a two-car chase, the Post says, which also has a video of the incident (see below). Either because of the wet pavement or because the stuntman lost control of the vehicle, the Ferrari swerved out of traffic and smashed into a post and then a building. In doing so, a woman was closely grazed, while a man was hurt as the lamppost fell directly on him. Either way, both have been rushed to the hospital and are believed to be recovering well from non-life threatening injuries, it has been said. Disney has not yet made any comment on the situation.

“A black Ferrari and a silver Mercedes were chasing each other. The Ferrari took a route down the center of the road, swerving between cars. The Mercedes took the outside lanes. The Ferrari took a sharp right to the left and lost it, swerving across the lanes, taking out a lamppost and a news stand. One lady was knocked to the ground and a lamppost landed directly on top of a chap.” Mark Watkins, a tourist from Birmingham, England, says for the Post, after witnessing the accident.

Aimee Dodds of New Zealand, another tourist, says the accident was very frightening. “[I was] watching the Ferrari weave through some [stunt] taxis. As the Ferrari took a right turn past one of the taxis, he took a wide turn and slammed straight into the Sbarro.” she says for the same publication. After the crash, panic took over the set until an ambulance and the authorities arrived on the scene, as can be seen in the video as well.

Several reports also claim that only one of the victims was not associated with the movie but, as of now, their identity has not yet been disclosed to the media.
