The future may become hell on earth for arachnophobes

We aren't sure what kind of permits people will need in order to ride six-legged robot spiders, and we imagine that Project Hexapod hasn't ironed out those little details yet either.

Still, the idea is up on Kickstarter and eagerly accepting whatever pledge interested people can make.

The idea is to make an open-source, 18 feet- / 5.5 meter-wide, 4,000 pound, 6-legged hydraulic robot that buyers can ride.

The robot goes by the name of Stompy, and we can only wonder how much mercy its legs will have to spare for asphalt.

“We are Project Hexapod. We’re a team of 3 instructors, 1 TA, and 15 students [and] we’ve spent the last four months running a class on how to design giant robots, and Stompy is the end result.”

As we said before, the project is hosted on Kickstarter, where the team lists certain boons that the pledges will earn supporters (prizes get better the higher the sum).
