Steve Jobs, the Chief Executive Officer of Apple, has claimed that the iPod Touch is the “most popular portable game player in the world” at an event while unveiling a new version of the device which is sure to capture even more of the market share of mobile gaming.

Jobs went on to say that, “The iPod Touch outsells Nintendo and Sony portable game players combined. It has over 50 percent market share for both the U.S. and worldwide. It has by far become the most popular game player in the world. And over 1.5 billion games and entertainment downloads have been downloaded from iTunes just to the iPod Touch.”

The Apple CEO is a bit of the mark when it comes to the sales of portable gaming devices.

Since the iPhone and its ilk launched in 2007 it has managed to sell about 120 million units worldwide and probably only a minority of them are used for gaming.

By contrast the Nintendo DS family, which includes the DS, the Lite and the XL, went over the 130 million mark and the PlayStation Portable from Sony also managed more than 60 million devices moved to gamers and all of them are used for gaming.

Apple might have an advantage when it comes to selling video games, mainly because of the lower prices and the frequent promotions and free launches.

Nintendo is also getting ready to launch the 3DS handheld, a device that will deliver three dimensional gaming without the use of any glasses and Sony is thought to also be working on a successor for the PSP, with some rumors claiming that it has phone like abilities.

After talking about the popularity of the iPod as a gaming device Jobs also announced a new, modernized version of the Touch that comes with the new A4 chip, a Retina Displays screen, better gyro and front and rear cameras.
