Stephenie Meyer says spinoff novella “Bree Tanner” will help fans better understand “Eclipse” the movie

In late March, “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, clearly one of the most popular writers of today, announced that she was coming out with an “Eclipse” spin-off, a novella called “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.” In a recent Q&A on the occasion of the release of the book, Meyer explained that all fans should read the book first before seeing the film, out in theaters on June 30, People magazine informs.

To fans of “Twilight” the book series, the name of Bree Tanner must certainly ring a bell, for she is one of the newborn vampires introduced in the third novel, on which the upcoming film is based. The novella, which comes in at over 190 pages, aims to present Bree’s life after she’s turned into a vampire and enlisted in the vampire army coming over to Forks to end life there as we know it. It will also allow fans to see the bigger picture once the movie comes out.

“Knowing that elements of Bree’s story were being incorporated into Eclipse, I hoped the story could somehow get out first. Personally, I always want to read a book before seeing the movie. I like to make my own mental pictures before someone else’s picture intrudes. Probably most of my readers don’t have the same hang-up, but for those who do, I wanted to give them the chance to create their own mental pictures of Bree and the gang,” Meyer recently said about the book, which became available both in brick and mortar stores and online this weekend.

But there’s more to the novella than just the ability to tell the story of another vampire, Meyer adds. Because “Eclipse” the book is written from Bella Swan’s perspective, this means that whatever is outside her visual range is outside the range of the viewer. The Bree novella, in other words, will bring another perspective on the immensely popular love triangle Bella – Edward – Jacob by incorporating bits and pieces that escape the notice of the main character.

“Because Eclipse is told only through Bella’s perspective, Meyer says reading Bree Tanner before seeing the third installment on the big screen will provide fans with additional background information to enjoy the film even more. ‘When there is so much going on off-stage so to speak, it leaves a lot of mysteries,’ she says. ‘Of all the Twilight books, Eclipse has the most going on outside of Bella’s view. For the movie to work, we have to see and understand some of these things’,” People writes, citing Meyer herself.

As also noted above, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” became available in book stores on June 5. Starting June 7 through July, the novella will also be available in full at Meyer’s official website.
