The team at Valve working on the Steam digital distribution service announces that it is adding a new tagging feature to the client, designed to allow players to add unique identifiers to each game in order to make them easier to find for the rest of the community.

The company explains in the official announcement that, "The most popular tags on any given product will be surfaced on said product's Steam page and allow users to easily find other products associated with that same tag."

Valve says that the new feature is designed to make it easier for players to discover new titles and expand their gaming horizons.

All the tags will be supervised by the company, which says that it will be careful to eliminate those who are offensive and those that do not make sense for a particular title.

At the moment, the Tagging feature is in open beta, available to all users, and the company is hoping that the community will offer solid feedback before it is added as a full part of Steam.

Al Farnsworth, a Steam-focused developer at Valve, states, "As the catalog of products available on Steam continues to grow, we want to ensure that it is easy for customers to find the particular types of games or software they are looking for. With this new feature, we are providing another powerful tool to help organize and browse products on Steam."

The community has quickly began using the new Tag feature and, so far, it seems to be working without a glitch, even if only a small number of the titles available on Steam have received identifiers.

Valve has repeatedly explained that it is looking for new ways to make games easier to find on Steam.

The company will launch an official SteamOS this year, alongside a new haptic controller and dedicated hardware from its partners.
