October was a good month for Google’s Chrome web browser as it managed to secure even more its top spot in the chart of the world’s most used browsers. Chrome’s market share climbed from 45.57 in September to 47.63 percent in October, a pretty good result, especially when compared with the microscopic improvements of previous months.

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, managed to lose even more ground. In October, Microsoft’s web browser was being used by 19.3 percent of Internet users, down from the 20.45 percent of the previous month, shows data from StatCounter.

Mozilla Firefox isn’t doing that much better either. The popular browser has actually lost some users, too. Its October market share was of 17.04 percent, down from September’s 17.45 percent.

Apple’s Safari has also lost a bit of its market share in October, dropping from 11.22 percent to 10.99 percent.

The most interesting aspect about this month, however, is that Opera has completely vanished off the chart. Since this one looks at both desktop, tablet and console browsers, the Android browser is also on the list. Instead of Opera, who usually occupied the fifth place, in October we find Android, with 1.36 percent.

This means that Opera has now been lumped in together with all other browsers. In September, its market share was of 1.4 percent.

As far as browser versions go, Chrome 37 continues to lead the chart, with 21.17 percent market share. Chrome 38, which was launched in the first week of October, is slowly winning ground too, with 16.68 market share. Firefox 32 continues to take up the third spot in the chart with 11.11 percent of all users.

Internet Explorer 11 sits tight with 9.52 percent market share, up from 9.23 percent of the previous month. Safari for iPad rounds up the top 5, with 6.35 percent of users.

The world picks Chrome

The world map holds no real surprises compared to last month’s results. Chrome is pretty much the go-to browser of the entire world. Google’s web browser “colors” the entire map, including North America, South America, most of Europe, northern and southern countries from Africa, a good part of Asia, including China and India, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Firefox is the most used browser in Germany, Austria, Syria, Iran, a whole bunch of countries in the central region of Africa, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

Microsoft’s web browser is the top choice in Japan and Papua New Guinea, while Apple’s Safari is the most used browser in Greenland.
