Earlier in the month, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, which has been working on a MMO called Stargate Worlds based on the hit television series, announced that it would be diverting some of its resources towards creating a third person shooter called Stargate Resistance set to be released in 2010.

Now, Kathryn Dutchin, who is the producer on Stargate Worlds, has told fan site Gateworld that “Cheyenne had a top team developing a persistent online shooter when the economy went belly up, and our funding dried up. Since Worlds, at that time, was at its peak burn, and very expensive, and we were also facing some of our toughest technical challenges with that title, to make it robust and ready for market, it became impossible to sustain the team and other studios as well.”

It seems that there is significant pressure from the investors in the company for it to put out a game as quickly as possible to bring in some revenue while continuing to make progress on the MMO, its main focus.

Stargate Resistance is set to focus on small unit battles between the System Lords and the Stargate teams. The background for the engagements will be a variety of worlds throughout the galaxy and each of the sides will have access to three distinct classes, Soldiers, Commandos, and Scientists for the Stargate teams and Goa’uld, Jaffa, and Ashrak for the System Lords.

Each will come with its own tactical role and load out and players will be able to experience the way each of the sides fights. The developers at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment are emphasizing that they are not simply taking out a piece of the MMO they are working on and selling it to eager fans but that they are creating a parallel experience focusing on aspects of the fictional universe that the Worlds MMO will not be tackling.
