Developer Blizzard has announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be launched on July 27 in the United States, Europe, South Korea and a host of other countries. The company also promises that the much awaited sequel will be available from its specialized online store shortly after it appears on the shelves of brick and mortar retailers.

The single player campaign of this first installment of StarCraft II will be focused on the Terrans and is set after the events of StarCraft: BroodWar. There are 29 missions players will go through, reports saying that Blizzard has taken great care to make sure that the challenges gamers overcome in the single player will prepare them, in part, for what they will face if they ever decide to play some competitive multiplayer. Jim Raynor will be the main character of Wings of Liberty, the Zerg and the Protoss getting the limelight in expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.

The game is still in a multiplayer beta, designed to allow Blizzard to balance the units and make sure the experience is as good as it can be on launch day. The new Battle.net service comes complete with leagues, achievements, stats tracking, cloud storage for save files and voice communication for players.

Recently, StarCraft II has faced some problems in South Korea, one of the biggest markets for the real time strategy franchise, because the ratings board gave the game an 18+ rating, which will restrict its availability if Blizzard does not succeed in lowering it.

Mike Morhaime, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Blizzard and one of the men who created the studio, said, “We've been looking forward to revisiting the StarCraft universe for many years, and we're excited that the time for that is almost here. Thanks to our beta testers, we're making great progress on the final stages of development, and we'll be ready to welcome players all over the world to StarCraft II and the new Battle.net in just a few months.”
