A trilogy for the RTS

Starcraft II is one of the most expected RTS (Real Time Strategy) games out there. Because Blizzard said it would release the game "when it's done," speculations and rumors as to when the title would actually be launched have been flowing in every direction. But none of these rumors ever took into account the huge single player campaigns that the game would have - so huge in fact that Blizzard announced that it would split these campaigns into distinct products.

Speaking at last weekend's BlizzCon, the lead producer of Starcraft II, Chris Sigaty, announced that because of the vast amounts of story the developers needed to incorporate in the single player campaigns, they made the decision to market them as distinct products via an elaborate time line. Although he faced some disapproval, Chris pointed out that it wasn't just a scheme to make more money, but that the decision was made for the fans. As an example, he said that the Terran campaign was very close to completion, but for the other two ones, Zerg and Protoss, development had hardly begun, which would've delayed the game for a long time, had they been scheduled for a common release.

He also stated that we mustn't see these future products as just three pieces to the Starcraft II puzzle, because they will all bring improvements to the older one in terms of gameplay and other changes, much like the expansion packs for other Blizzard titles, like Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne or Starcrat: Brood War. But, unlike previous releases, these products will bring a full single player story, not just a few missions.

Entitled Terrans: Wings of Liberty, Zerg: Heart of the Swarm and Protoss: Legacy of the Void, these three products will have distinct focuses, meta games on which the story will unfold. For example, the Terrans will be concerned about the upgrade of their technology whereas the Zerg will be centered more on their diplomacy.

Blizzard fans have no reason to worry, because each of these products will deliver a completely different user experience, making sure to satisfy their hunger for the much awaited strategy game.
