A Blizzard executive has confirmed that the company is interested in translating its biggest video game franchises, like Starcraft, into movies but will aim to create partnerships with the most talented creators in the industry, like James Cameron, who directed the recent three dimensional hit Avatar.

Rob Pardo, who is the executive vice president in charge or game design at Blizzard, told MTV Multiplayer that, “We’ve always had an interest in seeing our stuff on film or TV. It’s just tricky to find the right partners. We probably could have made a movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it’s really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties.

He then proceeded to drop the name of a creator that his company would be interesting to work with, adding, “That’s always been the challenge for us. I think if Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, ‘You want to make a ‘StarCraft’ movie?’ we’d probably sign that.”

Rob Pardo also went on to comment on the World of Warcraft movie, saying that the partnership with Legendary Pictures felt right for the company and confirming that at the moment the story of the movie is still being developed and that there will be no launch date announcement for quite some time.

Recently Gabe Newell, the Chief Executive Officer at Valve, talked about the possibilities for a Half Life movie and stated that he believes video game creators themselves need to be in control in order to assure the quality of the finished product.

Blizzard has just launched Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, a new real time strategy title in the series, and is now preparing to launch Cataclysm, a new expansion pack for World of Warcraft, the most popular MMO that uses the subscription model.
