A lot of older gamers were negatively surprised when developer Starbreeze and publisher Electronic Arts announced that they were planning to revive the old Syndicate franchise in the form of a first-person shooter, but the for the game creators the genre was a perfect fit.

Mikael Nermark, the chief executive officer at Starbreeze, told Gamasutra that “We’d been asked by EA – they came to us, and this is what we know; this is where our expertise lies. So that’s why we made it an FPS.

“You have to trust your own skills and realize what your strengths are. I think we did that, and I’m extremely proud of the studio and the guys working on the team.”

The executive added that the first-person shooter space was a crowded one at the moment, and that it was very hard to create a video game experience that stood out and impressed the audience.

Nermark further reported, “I’m not saying that, if we do a shooting game, we have to go and compete with the Battlefields or Call of Dutys, but we have to have the right kind of shooting for the game we’re making. So we don’t look at it from a genre perspective anymore.”

The new Syndicate now looks like a rather-classic first-person shooter experience with a number of special powers thrown into the mix in order to spice up the gameplay.

Gamers will be able to take control of one enemy and get their help during the strongest firefights. They will also get the ability to disarm enemies from a distance and determine some to turn on their fellow soldiers.

Syndicate currently has a release date of February 21 in North America and February 24 in Europe, and it will be playable on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC.
