Video game developer Starbreeze is announcing that it is working on a new device called StarVR, which will offer a full virtual reality experience and is designed to give gamers a chance to immerse themselves in new worlds.

The company wants to become a leader in the nascent field of VR solutions and has acquired InfinitEye, an engineering company based in France, in order to be able to deliver top-of-the-art tech to users.

StarVR will be designed to combine the virtual reality solution created by the studio with the video game line-up that it has launched and is currently working on.

The new device will support Steam Open VR standards and will also work with the Valhalla engine that Starbreeze is working with.

Video games for StarVR will be created by the company but also by partners like WeVR, Lionsgate, 505 Games, Skybound and Grab.

Andersson Klint, the chief executive officer of Starbreeze, states, "The landscape of entertainment is transforming and we strongly believe VR will be a big part of the story of our industry going forward. Our StarVR aims at bringing the next generation entertainment experiences to reality. By immersing ourselves into the VR field, we aim to learn fast, position Starbreeze for the future and allow people to enter into new worlds."

StarVR will need some solid support to become successful

So far, the developers at Starbreeze have not announced an official launch window or a price for the coming virtual reality solution.

It's surprising to see a video game-focused company launch its own VR solution, especially given the kind of competition that it will need to deal with.

In the fall of this year, Valve and HTC will launch their own concept, called Vive, which is apparently designed to solve all the problems associated with virtual reality until now.

Oculus Rift will deliver its own consumer version in the first quarter of next year, and the core package will include an Xbox One controller, an adapter that works with Windows 10, and the ability to stream games from the Microsoft home console.

In 2016, gamers will also get access to the Project Morpheus virtual reality hardware that Sony is developing for the PlayStation 4.
