Cryptic Studios, as the developer, and Atari, as the publisher, have announced that they are launching a new add-on for the Star Trek Online MMO, called The Foundry, which will allow them to develop and then share complex mission set in the game universe.

The two companies say that the tool is aimed directly at the more hardcore fans of the Star Trek universe, those who have fantasized about putting their own characters in tailor-made adventures that use the technology, the ships and the races of the universe.

The developer at Cryptic Studios are saying that The Foundry is very close to the tools that the team itself is using to deliver new content for Star Trek Online and that all the ideas that gamers have can be implemented in some way by using the new tools.

The Foundry includes all needed to create content and also to share it, with players then tasked with selecting the best user-created missions and giving them the in-game visibility they need.

Daniel Stahl, who is the executive producer working on Star Trek Online, has stated, “The Foundry is a type of tool all of us here, as Star Trek fans, have been eagerly anticipating for a very long time.”

He added, “The universe of Star Trek Online is constantly growing and improving, but now we are empowering users so that they may finally create their own Star Trek stories, missions and memorable characters inside our persistent game world. This is something truly special and we couldn't be more excited to see what creative fans come up with.”

Star Trek Online was criticized when initially launched because it lacked content for high-level players, but since then Cryptic Studios and Atari have worked hard to add more missions and to give non Starfleet players more to do in the MMO.
