There is hope again

The first piece of news about a massively multiplayer game based on the Star Trek universe was heard back in 2004 when Perpetual Entertainment announced its title. However, the game encountered lots of problems along the way and this January, Perpetual stopped developing it and transferred the license to another company (its name was uncertain - until now).

Pretty soon after, the official Cryptic Studios website put up a countdown to the 27th of July this year and lots of rumors linking them and the development of the Star Trek MMO started to be heard (especially because the image on the main page was very similar to the concept art of the game). However, no official confirmation was made by the company at that time.

Today, the mystery no longer exists: Cryptic has officially announced that it's working on the game's development but it offered no further details on the title. However, the company promised to offer more information about Star Trek MMO in Las Vegas this August, when the Star Trek Convention takes place. We can only hope that Perpetual's latest changes to the release (turning it into a more casual type of game) will not be featured in Cryptic's version.

"Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch," commented Jack Emmert, chief creative officer for Cryptic Studios.

Cryptic Studios is widely known for two MMO titles: City of Heroes and City of Villains, but it also had its share of annulled promising projects (the Marvel Universe Online game was canceled by Microsoft). However, we truly hope that everything will work as planned with Star Trek MMO and the game will finally get its much deserved (and anticipated) release. All the gamers out there and the most hardcore trekkers need it!
