PS4 and Xbox One versions will appear only if updates and cross-platform play are possible

Star Citizen, the upcoming spiritual successor to cult classics like Freelancer, is a PC game first and foremost and won't be dumbed down so that it might work potentially on consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One, according to creator Christopher Roberts.

Star Citizen captured the hearts and wallets of many fans back in 2012 when it was revealed as a Kickstarter project and generated a huge amount of money via the crowdfunding website.

Since then, the team at Cloud Imperium Games has been showcasing all sorts of different details about the title and how it will use different technologies available only on PC, like the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Amidst rumors that the game will also reach consoles, creator Christopher Roberts took to the Star Citizen forums and confirmed that no compromises would be made by him and his team.

"Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform," he emphasized. "We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations."

Roberts also clarified that the game could appear on the next-gen consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One but only in certain conditions, such as freedom for updates and cross-platform play.

"As far as consoles go, Star Citizen will never be on the PS3 or Xbox 360. As for the next-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, we have NO CURRENT PLANS, but my stance remains open and is consistent with the many interviews I’ve given," he added.

"IF the platform holders (Sony and Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms, then I would CONSIDER supporting them."

As such, the only clear platform for Star Citizen will be the PC one, at least for now.
